Two People Critical, Four Others Serious In Head On Collision On The N3

[PIETERMARITZBURG, KZN – 28 JUNE 2013]

Incident Time : 08h00

A head on collision between two light motor vehicles on the N3 Pietermaritzburg bound near Camperdown has left two people with critical injuries and four other with serious injuries this morning.

ER24 paramedics from Hillcrest and Pietermaritzburg responded to the scene and found the two vehicles still in the road with extensive damage to both Vehicles. Paramedics assessed the patients and found that the one car had five occupants in the car and just one occupant in the second car. The car with the five patients had two people in a critical condition while the front two patients and the patient sitting in the middle had sustained serious injuries.

The two critical condition patients needed Advanced Life Support intervention due to the severity of their injuries. One of the patients had to be airlifted to Hillcrest Private Hospital by AER24 KZN for rapid medical care.

The driver of the other car and the three serious patients were all treated on scene for suspected neck and back injuries and multiple cuts and abrasions.

All patients were stabilised on scene and transported to various hospitals for further medical care.

It is believed that the driver of the one car travelling in the direction of Durban veered off the road after losing control after trying to avoid a tyre in the road and went through the centre medium and collided with the other car. All necessary authorities were on scene and would investigate the incident further.

In the same area last night a truck accident occurred leaving two occupants entrapped for over two hours while emergency personnel used the Jaws of Life and other rescue equipment to extricate the two men from the wreckage. Both men had sustained serious injuries and were treated by Advanced Life Support intervention before being transported to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for further medical care.

All necessary authorities were on the scene and would investigate the accident further.
