Just after 05:20am this morning Rescue Care paramedics received a call of a serious collision on the corner of West Street and Aliwal Street.
On arrival paramedics found that a SUV and a truck had collided in the junction. On a closer inspection it was found that the SUV driver was severely entrapped in the wreckage. Paramedics worked quickly to try and stabilise the severely injured 19 year old man whilst fire fighters prepared the rescue equipment to try and cut the man free. Unfortunately before paramedics and firefighters could free the young man he passed away due to the severity of his injuries. Fireman then used the Jaws of life and other hydraulic equipment to remove the man. The truck driver had also been injured and was transported by Rescue Care to St Augustine’s Hospital for further care that he required.
It is unclear what caused the collision however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.
Traffic was severely affected as Aliwal Street North bound was closed to traffic whilst emergency personal worked on the scene.
