Netcare 911 paramedics, its rescue unit and other services responded to an accident on the N2 near Umgubaba on the KZN South Coast.
Upon their arrival on scene they found that two vehicles collided and one vehicle proceeded to burst into flames.
Tragically four people died, two were in a critical condition and two people sustained serious injuries.
One of the critically injured people was airlifted to hospital for the urgent medical care required. The other patients were treated on scene, before they were transported to various hospitals for further medical care.
Exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain the subject of a police investigation.
