24 Dead and 26 injured in multiple vehicle pile up in Pinetown

Just after 6pm Rescue Care received multiple calls for a horrific accident on Old Main Road near the M13.

On arrival paramedics were horrified with what they saw before them. A truck had ploughed into four taxis and two cars in the junction. The truck tore through the vehicles at such force that the vehicles were shredded. Passengers from the vehicles were ejected as vehicles rolled after the impact. Some passengers were entrapped in the wreckage. More resources were called in to assist with the multiple casualty scene and a command centre was set up to co ordinate the scene management.

Paramedics found that twenty four people had been fatally injured and twenty six other had sustained various injuries including seven sustaining critical injuries. All the injured were stabilized on the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics and Doctors before being rushed to various Durban Hospitals for further care that they required.

It is unclear what caused the collision however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.

Traffic was severely affected as Old Main Road was closed in both directions to allow emergency personal to work on scene.
