Serious Witkoppen accident last night

ER24 Paramedics and ambulance crew attended to a serious collision between two vehicles late last night at about 23:00.

The accident occurred on the corners of Witkoppen and Beyers Naude Roads in the western suburbs of Johannesburg.

It is believed that one of the vehicles failed to stop at the traffic light, believed to be out of order at the time.

One vehicle overturned and the driver, a woman in her 30’s, had to be placed on life support before attempts were made to free her from the wreck.

Due to the severe damage to the vehicle, it took over an hour to free the woman from the vehicle. Fire fighters had to remove the roof of the vehicle using the Jaws of Life.

Due to the severity of her injuries, a medical helicopter was dispatched and the woman was airlifted to Garden City hospital for further intensive treatment.

The driver of the second vehicle involved, a  Toyota Prado, sustained only minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

The Renault that the woman was travelling in, collided into a nearby stationary towing vehicle. Fortunately despite the damage to the vehicle, the two occupants were not injured.

The exact cause of this serious accident is still unknown and will be investigated by authorities.
