Three People Killed in Yzerfontein Head-on Collision

Since the start of the weekend more than 15 people were fatally injured in motor vehicle collisions across the country, and it seems that motor vehicle collisions are still taking its toll into the week.

Three people were killed in a head on collision between two bakkies on the R27 approximately 25km before Yzerfontein this evening. Paramedics that arrived on the scene described it as horrific when they noticed the damage on the two vehicles. On further assessment they found that two people, a woman and a man believed to be in their late 30’s, sustained fatal injuries in one of the vehicles.

The other vehicle had a man, believed to be in his 20’s, that was in a critical condition. He was trapped behind the steering wheel of the vehicle and the local Metro Rescue Services had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to free him from the wreckage. Once freed, paramedics were able to further stabilise him. A medical helicopter was called to the scene to airlift the man to a hospital in Cape Town for further medical management. He sustained multiple injuries and had reach a medical facility as soon as possible. An ER24 Advanced Life Support Paramedic escorted the man in the helicopter to the hospital. Sadly the male passenger in this vehicle also sustained fatal injuries. There was nothing that paramedics could do for the three occupants with fatal injuries and they were declared dead on the scene.

The cause of this incident is not yet known and will be investigated by the local authorities.
