Truck driver critically injured in truck fire

Just after 2pm today Rescue Care paramedics were called to a building fire on Smith Street just after Field Street.

On arrival paramedics and SAPS search and rescue found that a truck had been doing a delivery when it is alleged that someone set the vehicle alight. The entire cabin had been burnt and the driver was found on the sidewalk in a critical condition. Advanced Life Support intervention was needed to stabilize the injured man. He had suffered severe burn wounds from the fire. Once stabilized on the scene he was transported by Rescue Care to St Augustine’s Hospital for further care that he required.

SAPS and Durban Fire were on the scene and will be investigating exactly what happened.

Smith Street was closed at Field Street whilst emergency personal worked to clear the scene, this caused major traffic build up in the city centre.
