How do we calculate the average number of days we spend in traffic in South Africa?

TomTom has recently announced the latest Traffic Congestion Index for South Africa. This revealed that on average, commuters around South Africa are spending 3.5 working days a year stuck in traffic.

But how do we calculate this?

The figure of 3.5 days that South African’s are stuck in traffic per year was calculated based on the total average amount of hours spent in traffic during peak hours from Monday to Friday, over all 6 South African cities, divided by 24 hours. This figure equates to 3.5 full days in traffic.

If we divide this figure by an 8 hour working day, the total number of working days stuck in traffic amounts to 10 days, on average per year for South Africa (these figures will differ per city calculated on an individual basis).
