99 December road deaths in Gauteng – 40 % of them Pedestrians

Ninety-nine people have died on Gauteng’s roads so far this festive season, the Johannesburg metro police department said on Tuesday.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said almost 40% of those killed were pedestrians.

“At least eight people have died along the Golden Highway in Orange Farm,” he said, adding that alcohol had contributed to the fatalities.

“People visit taverns late at night and cross the highway on their way back home and then end up being bumped and killed.”

Minnaar called on people to avoid crossing busy roads, especially after consuming alcohol.
