Christmas eve collision leaves 1 dead, 12 injured

Rescue Care and ER24 paramedics responded to a serious collision today just before 4pm at the intersection of Umgeni Road and Ilala Avenue in Springfield Park Durban.

First to arrive on scene Rescue Care paramedics found carnage, the scene was across the intersection and on the pavement. Immediately more resources were called to assist including advanced life support units. Two vehicles had collided in the junction before one of the vehicles lost control mounted the pavement and collided with three pedestrians waiting for the bus to arrive. On assessment paramedics found that one of the drivers had sustained fatal injuries and had passed away before paramedics arrival. One of the pedestrians had sustained critical injuries and was placed on a manual ventilator. Once stabilized the lady was transported by Rescue Care to a nearby hospital. Two other pedestrians had also sustained serious injuries and also needed Advanced Life Support intervention to stabilize them. A further nine people from both vehicles suffered minor injuries and once all of the injured were stabilized they were transported by ambulances to various Durban Hospitals for further care that they required.

It is unclear what caused the collision however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.

Traffic was severely affected as emergency personal worked to stabilize the injured before transporting them to hospital.
