An elderly woman was left in a critical condition when she apparently lost control of her vehicle and it fell into a ravine in Wembley, Pietermaritzburg yesterday afternoon.

The 80-year-old woman was driving along Taunton Road when her vehicle veered off the roadway, crashed through a fence and landed in the ravine.

Local rescue services used a high-angle rescue system to free her from the wreckage after which ER24 paramedics stabilised and transported her to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for further medical care.

The cause for her losing control of her vehicle is unclear but responding medics said she might have “blacked out” due to the heat in that area yesterday.

Joint efforts between the police and other services made her rescue possible.

The incident is under investigation by local authorities.
