Rescue Care paramedics were called to the Kloof Gorge just after 4pm this afternoon for a 19 year old male who had fallen whilst rock climbing.

On arrival Rescue Care paramedics found the Mountain Rescue Club of South Africa in attendance with their members in the valley with the injured male whilst their colleagues set up a sophisticated rope system to bring the injured patient up the steep slope. It is thought the patient had fallen approximately 15 metres before landing on the ground. Joined by SAPS Search and Rescue unit the patient was stabilized in the valley by a doctor as well as a Advanced Life Support Paramedic before being placed on specialized spinal equipment and was then hoisted to safety. Once the rescuers had successfully hoisted the patient up to the pathway he was carried out of the valley and up a steep incline to an awaiting Rescue Care ambulance which transported him to a nearby hospital for the further care that he required.

It is unclear what caused the young man to fall, but he was fortunately with friends who were able to raise the alarm for help.
