Five killed, one airlifted in Kromdraai collision

KROMDRAAI – Five people were killed and another person was airlifted this afternoon when their vehicle overturned several times and landed in a river next to the T3 in Kromdraai, west of Johannesburg.

Shortly after 15:00 paramedics arrived on the scene where they found bystanders on the side of the road pointing down to the river. They explained to paramedics that the vehicle overturned several times and landed on its roof in the river. They [the bystanders] turned the vehicle back onto its wheels and pulled all of the occupants out of the vehicle.  Paramedics found that five of the occupants succumbed to their injuries.

A man, believed to be in his early twenties, was found with critical injuries. The ER24 medical helicopter was called to the scene to airlift him to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for further medical management.

It is believed that the occupants were on their way to Manziville when the incident occurred.

The incident was handed over to the local authorities. The exact cause of the incident is not yet known.
