Man found dead along R56 embankment

A man in his forties was found dead in a mangled vehicle along the R56 near Richmond, Pietermaritzburg this morning.

ER24 paramedics gained access to the deceased through the vehicle’s sunroof to examine him and found that he had already succumbed to possible head injuries.

A driver who witnessed the collision and notified ER24 about it said the vehicle veered off the roadway and rolled down a steep embankment.

The vehicle was found approximately 15 meters from the tar road and the extremity of its damage suggests that it rolled several times before it stopped.

There were no other vehicles involved in the collision.

Fire department personnel are currently using jaws-of-life equipment to remove the body from the vehicle.

The exact circumstances leading to the collision are currently under investigation.
