What is the best advice you would offer to a passenger travelling by bus?

Have you ever travelled by bus -not the school bus – but a luxury bus on a long journey? What advice would have made your trip more comfortable? I did this often as a student travelling the 740km between Bloemfontein and Oudtshoorn. This was however several years ago when many of these buses did not provide all the comforts that they do today! Bus services have made significant strides in providing both safety and comfort and we would like to take a closer look at some of these!

On the Arrive Alive website we find rather comprehensive section with a Guide to Safety for Bus Passengers. This offers information to enhance the safety of commuters from approaching the bus to where they disembark the Bus. For a more interesting angle we have however decided to approach a regular passenger on one of the Intercape buses with a few questions to share some light on what really matters for the passenger!

  • Would you regard yourself as a regular bus passenger – any idea how many road trips you have undertaken by bus?
Yes, I have travelled 7 times with Intercape in the past 3 years
  • Which route have you travelled most by bus?
Johannesburg to Cape Town
  • Rate the following in sequence of importance when you decide on a specific bus service
1 Reputation for Safety
2 Comfort
3 Security of possessions
4 Punctuality
5 On-bus service
6 Affordability
7 Timely arrival
8 Baggage Security
  • Do you take all these factors into consideration before booking a specific bus service?
Yes, for sure
  • Which other factors do you consider as important?
The friendliness of the staff, and the times that the coaches travel
  • How do you go about making a booking? Do you call, go to a bus centre or do you go online to make a booking?
Online or at my local Shoprite
  • What is the best advice you would have for the novice bus traveller?
Be careful how you pack – your luggage will be far away from you when you are in the coach, so you can’t quickly take out a warm top or get to your purse if you packed it in your suitcase. Also book early to make sure you find space.
  • Any specific recommendations for a long distance trip as to a much shorter trip?
Make use of the stops on longer trips – otherwise you might not get another opportunity to stretch your legs very soon. Also take a small comfortable pillow along on long trips. Keep a handbag close with the things you might need- like Lipice
  • What can passengers do to ensure that others around them are also comfortable – do you believe that fellow passengers are considerate to one another?
Some are more considerate than others, but the rule of thumb is don’t do anything to other passengers that would annoy you – like thumping headphones or talking loud on your cellphone when others are watching the on-board movie
  • What would you regard as inconsiderate behaviour from passengers?
Taking up more space than what is reasonable yours – like bringing too much hand luggage and putting it in the way of the person next to you. Also making a lot of noise when It is time to sleep on the Sleepliner
  • What have you seen Intercape do to ensure that passengers are comfortable?
The hostesses walk around regularly and check on the passengers. They offer a cash bar, and collect rubbish after stops
  • What is it about Intercape that motivates you to book another trip with them?
I always feel safe on Intercape busses. The drivers stick to the traffic rules while you see other buses come flying past – sometimes even overtaking on a solid white line. With Intercape you don’t get the feeling that the bus is racing another bus to get there first
