A motorbike rider was left in a critical condition after his bike crash on Wilgerood road near Ouklip last night on Johannesburg West Rand.

Paramedics from ER24 and other services arrived on the scene and found the man, believed to be in his 50’s, lying in the road with his bike wedged up against the embankment. He was in a critical condition and had to be stabilised by the paramedics on the scene before he could be rushed off to a nearby hospital for further medical management.

According to bystanders on the scene, the rider apparently crashed into a metal cross that was lying in the middle of the road. One bystander explained that the cross was planted on the side of the road as a remembrance to a previous fatality that took place in the area. “It appears as if someone deliberately ripped it from the side of the road and through it onto the road’s surface”, the bystander said.

Metro police did not attend the incident, however friends of the rider that arrived on the scene were advised to report the incident to the Johannesburg Metro Police and SAPS. ER24’s Scene Safety Unit removed as much debris from the road’s surface as possible in order to avoid further damage to other vehicles.
