Two critical after colliding with tree on the N3 outside of Pietermaritzburg

A pedestrian and the driver of the vehicle that hit him sustained critical injuries on the N3 outside of Pietermaritzburg yesterday afternoon.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene to find the badly damaged vehicle resting against a tree. The driver, a man in his fifties, had been pulled out of his vehicle by some members of the community while others attended to the pedestrian.

Both patients suffered severe head, neck and chest injuries and advanced life support was performed on them before they were rapidly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Witnesses on scene told paramedics that the vehicle collided with the pedestrian after the driver had apparently veered off the road. They added that the pedestrian was dragged for some distance before the vehicle collided with a tree.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
