SAPS and RSS Security recover suspect’s vehicle

At around 1pm today May 15, 2014 a RSS reaction officer was patrolling Olivedale Ext 1, he noticed a car parked on the side of the road and decided to try and get the registration number, he then saw the gate to a home on the other side of the road was open and saw a man running out of the property. At the same time alarm activation was triggered to the RSS call centre from a beam activation.

The suspects, two armed men pointed a firearm at the RSS officer; he fired seven shots at the vehicle hitting the back of the vehicle and taking out the front tyre.  The suspects continued to speed away, the officer alerted Tom Cat Security that the suspects were heading in their direction. The Tom Cat guard managed to get the registration number and informed RSS in which direction they fled.

Another shot was fired on the corner of Kevin Road and David Street. Douglasdale SAPS were called and immediately responded to the incident, both SAPS and RSS were chasing after the suspects who were on Malibongwe, driving towards the N1 highway.  The suspects abandoned the vehicle on the on-ramp due to damage to the tyre and fled on foot. Policing are currently combing the area for them with the K9 Unit.

The vehicle which was recovered contained many expensive stolen items such as speakers, PlayStation, TV and other electronic equipment.  Police also recovered gloves, balaclavas, an axe used for breaking into premises and other items  which the suspects left behind.

The registration number has been identified as belonging to a resident of Soweto. The same car and registration number has been positively linked to a number of Linden SAPS cases. Linden police have been searching for both the car and suspects.

The suspects were not successful in gaining entrance into the home on Kevin Road but took the gate off the rails and turned the cameras to face away from them. There was a large police and security presence at both scenes, the home and the onramp.

Police photographers and forensics have been on scene taking fingerprints and collecting DNA samples.

Douglasdale Police ask anyone who had a break-in today to please contact them as the stolen goods recovered in the vehicle must have been from another incident most probably in the area.

Residents are urged to make sure their property is 100% secure and that gates cannot be lifted from the rails. Also having extra security like beams helps to ensure quick response before suspects gain entry into your homes.
