A man was killed and three others injured in two separate incidents on the N3 highway near Shongweni, KwaZulu Natal.

ER24 paramedics, along with rescue services from SAPS and RescueTech, responded to the Shongweni bridge where they found two large trucks on the embankment below.

A truck apparently attempted to overtake another before colliding into the back of it sending both of them through the barrier down the embankment.

The driver of one of the trucks sustained moderate injuries and was trapped inside the vehicle. Rescue paramedics from ER24 and RescueTech made their way down to the vehicle and began to free the driver from his vehicle. Once freed, the driver was treated for his injuries before being transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Both occupants of the second truck fortunately did not sustain any injuries.

While paramedics were attending to the incident, a second collision occurred in the opposite direction between another two trucks.

The driver of one of the trucks was killed and two others were critically injured when the two collided. Advanced live support was performed on the two injured patients before they were transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The exact cause of the two collisions is not yet known.
