Sixteen people were injured this morning when a taxi overturned on the N1 near the Winelands one stop in Kraaifontein, Cape Town.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found a taxi lying on its side near an embankment. Fellow motorists had stopped and offered assistance to the injured.

Metro services had to close the highway for an hour to allow emergency workers to work safely.

Paramedics began their treatment of the 16 patients found on scene. Provincial services had to deploy a ladder across the embankment to allow the patients to be passed across.

Once all the patients were moved across the embankment, they were transported to various hospitals in the area for further medical treatment.

The exact cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
