Netcare 911 paramedics and other services responded to an accident on the N4 outside Rustenburg this morning.
Upon their arrival on scene they found that two motor vehicles had collided head-on resulting in one person tragically losing a life, one person was found in a critical condition and two people sustained serious injuries.
The injured patients were treated on scene before they were transported to hospital for further medical care.
Exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain the subject of a police investigation.
