Man killed in burning car on the R500 near Potchefstroom

A man was killed and six others were injured on the R500 near Potchefstroom on Sunday afternoon.

Paramedics from ER24 attended a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of the R500 and R53 where they found one vehicle well alight and another standing several meters away from it. Bystanders pointed out that the driver in the vehicle was still trapped in it. Unfortunately paramedics could not get close to the vehicle to rapidly extricate the man from the burning car.

After the flames were extinguished, they found the man dead in the vehicle. At this stage it is unclear if he died upon collision or as a result of the fire.

Six people from the other vehicle were treated for various injuries on the scene. The occupants of the vehicle, ranging from six to forty years old, were transported to Potchefstroom Provincial Hospital and Mediclinic Potchefstroom respectively.

It is understood that one of the vehicles apparently skipped a stop street at the intersection. The exact cause of the incident is not yet known. The incident was handed over to the local authorities for further investigation.
