What do I need to know when buying a motorbike trailer?

Question:

An interesting subject – Motorcycle trailers, I am interested in buying a motorbike trailer, we are keen motorbike riders, are planning a few road trips in the near future and is not sure if a motorbike trailer is legal and if  there are any laws w.r.t trailers and if so where can I read / obtain the information. Is there any specific requirements by law in South Africa, your help or redirection in this matter will be highly appreciated.

Answer:

This one is easy. A trailer is legal as long as it adheres to the local manufacturing and traffic laws, and towed by another road legal and self-propelled vehicle. The trailer needs to have reflective tape and reflectors on the front, sides and rear and to spec. If you approach any of the manufacturers below, you’ll know for sure that ALL specs and laws have been met.

What I’m saying is that Motorcycle Trailers are most certainly allowed BUT a word of advice: Instead of going through all the trouble to make it yourself, COR, etc. just go buy one from a proper dealer or manufacturer. Also make sure that your motorcycle/s will fit and look for a trailer that will make your life easy to load and unload your motorcycles. There are some awesome products out there that takes only one person to load and unload, but at a price for some.

Even more important is, when you buy the trailer, get yourself a decent set of tie-downs, AND get someone in the know to show you how to tie down a motorcycle properly. The last thing you want is to drop the motorcycle or damage the fork seals when doing it all wrong. This takes skill, at first, and is certainly not just putting luggage on a trailer, or roof carrier; even the way you drive will have to change when pulling that extra weight in the back.

Here are your TOP options:

Happy shopping but in the end, riding your motorcycles to the destination becomes a different experience all together … It becomes a Journey!
