Emergency services have responded to Newlands West drive near the intersection with Loop West Crescent, where there has been a serious accident. A man who is estimated to be about 30 years old has been hit by a motor vehicle.

Paramedics, from KZN EMS and a private ambulance service, worked frantically as a team to provide the man with the urgent lifesaving emergency medical care he required. The team of highly skilled paramedics preformed several advanced life support procedures on the man in an attempt to stabilize him as his injuries, were life threatening. The man had apparently been crossing the road when he was knocked, the force of the collision knocked the man over the pavement and in the brush, next the road, which is where the paramedics found the critically injured man lying.

Due to the critical nature of the man’s injuries the assistance of the KZN Health Departments air ambulance was requested to air lift the man to King Edward hospital, in Durban. The benefit of airlifting the patient is that not only are there specialized paramedics on board the helicopter to treat the patient, but the transport time to hospital is greatly reduced as the helicopter can fly faster than ambulances can be driven and there is not the problem with delays due to traffic.

The patient was handed over to a specialized trauma team at King Edward Hospital, who continued the care initiated by the paramedics.

The police who were also on the scene are investigating the incident.
