Today members of the elite Special Task Force, Air Wing and the Hawks foiled a cash-in-transit heist 20 km outside of Welkom in the Free State. A gang of 18 suspects in five cars rammed a Bidvest Protea Coin vehicle, but before they could do any more harm, the police moved in. The suspects fled in their vehicles in different directions, opening fire on SAPS members, who returned fire. Of the 18, police arrested 13 (three of whom were wounded), four were fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire, and one escaped (although he is believed to be wounded). Police recovered all five vehicles, 4 pistols, 1 revolver, 3 R5 rifles and an AK47 rifle.
