Cyclist injured in collision with bakkie

This morning paramedics from several ambulance services, the Hibiscus coast Fire department and the South African Police services responded to an incident ton the N2 near Merlwood, which is a few kilometres inland from Port Shepstone on the KZN south coast.

When the paramedics arrived on scene they found that a man, estimated to be in his twenties, who had been cycling, had been hit by a bakkie. Amazingly the man had been flung into the air and landed on the back of the bakkie that he had been struck by, among the poles, corticated iron sheets and planks that were being carried on the back of the bakkie. The paramedics had to clamber onto the back of the bakkie to treat the patient, who had sustained serious injuries. The paramedics, having to get a footing among the wood poles, provided the necessary medical care to the patient, who fortunately remained in a stable condition.

The patient, was secured to a trauma board, while still on the back of the bakkie, before being loaded into a private ambulance. The patient was transported to hospital by the paramedics from the private ambulance service.

The police have started an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.
