Rescue Care paramedics were called to a horrific collision just after 2am this morning at the intersection of Stanger Street and Somtseu Road in Durban central.

When paramedics arrived on scene they were met with absolute carnage. Two vehicles had collided in the junction before one rolled several times coming to rest a far distance from the intersection. They quickly assessed the scene and found that five people were entrapped in the wreckage whilst it lay on its side and another four people in the other vehicle had been ejected after the collision. They immediately called for assistance and more ambulances, SAPS and fire were dispatched. Once the fire department had used the jaws of life to remove the roof of the vehicle and free the trapped patients it was discovered that four of the occupants had suffered fatal injuries and had passed away, the fifth person sustained serious injuries and were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care that he required. In the second vehicle one occupant suffered fatal injuries whilst three others sustained serious injuries. Once they had been stabilized on the scene they were transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required.

At this stage it is unclear what caused the collision however the SAPS collision unit was in attendance and will be investigating further.

Stanger street was closed from Old Fort Road and Somtseu Road whilst emergency personal worked to clear the scene.
