Four suspects, including a business owner were remanded in custody by the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday following their arrest on Monday after they allegedly staged a false robbery.

It is alleged that the businessman requested the services of a security company to escort his 23-year-old employee to bank an amount of R440 000 on Monday morning. When the employee was about to enter the bank, a man clad in blue overalls approached him, grabbed the money and fled the scene in a white VW Polo.

Police investigations uncovered that the employee, his employer and two other suspects had staged the robbery. The hunt for the other suspects then ensued and they were arrested on the same day. An amount of R156 000 was found in their possession.

Three of the suspects, aged 23, 28 and 31 also confessed that they hijacked the brand new Polo from a 24-year-old woman who had gone to a wedding in Ga-Makanye village in Mankweng last week Saturday. They allegedly pointed her with a firearm before driving off.

The three who cannot be named are expected to appear in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Friday on the car hijacking charge, whilst their fake robbery case has been remanded to October 16 for bail application.
