One killed, four injured in truck collision in Potchefstroom

A man was killed and four others injured this evening, including three children, when a bakkie collided with a truck on the R53 in Potchefstroom.

ER24 paramedics and provincial fire services arrived on scene and found that a wrecked bakkie lay beneath a large truck. Five people lay trapped within the mangled bakkie.

On assessment, paramedics discovered that the driver had sustained fatal injuries and lay trapped behind the steering wheel.

A woman and three children, aged between three months to 10 years, were in a critical condition and were also lay trapped inside the vehicle.

Provincial fire services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the patients before treatment could continue.

Once freed, paramedics provided the patients with advanced life support before they were rapidly transported to Potchefstroom Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

It is believed that the collision was cause by the truck doing a u-turn on the road.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
