Vigilant Bhisho Crime Prevention members have arrested another two Western Cape men suspected of transporting more than 600 abalone (Perlemoen) worth an estimated R800 000 in Bhisho today at about 09:00.
It is alleged that the suspects (20) and (28) were spotted driving a white bakkie with a vehicle registration from the Western Cape, Gansbaai en route to Durban. The members, who were on patrol noticed liquid dripping from the back of the bakkie. They decided to stop the driver and questioned him. When he failed to give satisfactory answers, the members examined the back of the bakkie and found plastic containers filled with abalone. The driver was arrested immediately.
Both suspects had been charged with contravening the Marine Living Resources Act of 1998 and will appear in the King William’s Town Magistrate’s Court soon. This is a second arrest within a month, as on 22 September 2014, a Western Cape man suspected of transporting more than 800 abalone units worth an estimated R1-million was also arrested in King William’s Town. The two arrests in King William’s Town and Bisho saw the confiscation of illegal abalone estimated to a value of 1.8 million rand.
Colonel Thembile Adoni, Station Commander of Bhisho commended his members for a sterling job. “This shows that our members are attentive when they are doing their patrols and crime prevention operations. This should also send out a warning to criminals that our police officials are dedicated and committed when executing their duties,” he said.
