Environmental Affairs to launch Western Cape summer fire season

The Department of Environmental Affairs’ Working on Fire programme will officially launch the provincial summer fire season on 1 December 2014 at the Stellenbosch Airfield, Cape Town.

Although the summer fire season officially starts on 1 December, the Western Cape has already experienced many multi-day fires since September 2014. Coupled with this year’s worst fire season in seven years, recorded in the northern parts of South Africa, a rough fire season lies ahead for the Western Cape.

Join the department for a fun-filled and action packed morning, where firefighting demonstrations will be conducted, as well as information on who to speak to for credible info, and also enjoy seeing fire fighters and aircrafts in action. The Department’s Dr Christo Marais, the Chief Director for National Resource Management (NRM) will deliver the keynote address on behalf of the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs Ms. Barbara Thomson. Other speakers for the day include Mr Anton Bredell, Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning of the Western Cape Disaster Management & Fire Brigade Services.

Media is invited to cover the event as follows, and will be afforded opportunities for photographs and interviews.
