M4 La Lucia rear-end collision leaves 11 injured

Eleven people were injured, one critically injured so, after an H 100 truck collided into the rear of a bakkie on the M4 south in La Lucia this afternoon. Exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain a subject for police investigation and comment.

Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire department arrived and found the roadway littered with accident debris and the twisted remains of the vehicles. The driver of the H 100 was severely trapped in the twisted metal of the truck with life threatening injuries.

While the firemen used the Jaws of Life to free the injured man, paramedics clambered into the wreckage to stabilise the patient. After triaging medics found that ten passengers from the H100 bakkie had also sustained injuries ranging from serious to minor, the other vehicle occupants escaped uninjured.

After the critically wounded man was extricated and placed on a ventilator, paramedics transported him and the other patients to a nearby hospital for the care that they required.
