East London Hawks members bust tyre thieves

Police turned the wheel on suspects after busting them in possession of R60 000-00 worth of stolen tyres in Scenery Park outside East London.

East London SAPS received information about stolen tyres stored in a shack. Captain Raymond Buys who is attached to the Hawks was assisted by the Tactical Response Team and East London Flying Squad to work on this case. He requested back up and went to investigate the allegation.

Whilst waiting for back-up, Captain Buys received a call informing him that there was a blue Toyota Tazz transporting tyres not far from the identified shack. Police closed in on the shack and arrested one suspect who was inside with all the alleged stolen tyres. Thirty (30) brand new tyres of various sizes were recovered.

Police questioned the 33-year-old suspect. At about the same time police received information that the blue Toyota Tazz was heading back to the shack after delivering two Jeep Tyres. Members from the TRT swooped down on the vehicle and managed to arrest the two occupants inside the vehicle aged 34 and 56 years. The police learnt the tyres were already sold and that the identified premise was a temporary storage place for delivery to different buyers.

Police questioned the suspects individually and obtained more information that can help break the case. The 56-year-old suspect provided information to the police members about where he stole the tyres from and has identified a tyre- business in East London. A happy owner recovered all his stolen goods and the three suspects were charged and detained at Scenery Park Police Station for possession of suspected stolen property.
