The Duncan Village Tracking Unit in East London allowed their instinct to lead them to investigate a suspicious driver of a vehicle, only to learn that the vehicle was hi-jacked two hours before in Butterworth.
Whilst patrolling in Duncan Village policing area on 07th December 2014 at about 12:30, members attached to the Tracking Unit, heard a radio message that Kei Bridge police were chasing a silver Volkswagen Polo which was hi-jacked in Butterworth. It was alleged that the owner of the vehicle was strangled, stabbed and taken to hospital in Butterworth.
The Kei Bridge Police lost sight of the vehicle as it sped away from them in the direction of East London and they managed to call assistance to assist. Members driving vehicles fitted with Vehicle Tracker Unit went out on patrol in search of the stolen Volkswagen Polo.
As they approached the vehicle the driver got out pretending that there was something wrong with the vehicle’s engine, whilst the other two occupants jumped and fled on foot. Police chased the driver and managed to arrest him after he also tried to flee as well. Members confirmed the details of the vehicle to be the same as those of the hi-jacked vehicle. Police found several bloodstains on the vehicle. It later emerged that the vehicle was sold for a R20 000-00.
The 21-year-old suspect was detained and charged at the Duncan Village Police Station. The Station Commander of Duncan Village, Colonel Piet Bellingan congratulated the members for their swift action and applying their knowledge to the situation. Colonel Bellingan also said “To search and find a vehicle hi-jacked is like finding a needle in a haystack and that these members found that needle today, without their vehicle being equipped with a Vehicle Tracker Unit”.
