Lucky escape for construction worker when an asphalt roller flipped backwards

A 34-year-old man escaped serious injury this afternoon when an asphalt roller flipped backwards while he was busy reversing it off a truck in Pietermaritzburg.

Paramedics from ER24 that arrived on the scene found the asphalt roller lying upside down, expecting to find the driver trapped underneath it. Amazed, they found the man walking up to them holding his arm. He only sustained a fracture with no other visible injuries.

He explained to paramedics that as the roller started tipping backwards he managed to jump from the machine to avoid being crushed underneath it.
