Paramedics from KZN Emergency Medical Services have responded to multiple accidents across the province last night, which followed on from an already busy day yesterday.
In the early evening in the Makhowe area in Hluhluwe, Umkhanyakude district, KZN EMS paramedics responded to an incident involving a bus, which had left the road and overturned, coming to rest on its roof down a small embankment .
They arrived on scene to find that sadly one person had died and that 48 other patients had sustained injuries, which ranged from critical to minor. The patients were treated on scene before being transported to several hospitals in the area for continued care.
Two people were killed and three injured in a separate collision which occurred just after midnight. Paramedics in the Zululand district responded to the R34, for the collision which was between two bakkies (one had been towing the other) and a truck. The bakkie that was being towed collided with the truck and sadly two occupants in this vehicle were fatality injured, and a third occupant survived with serious injuries. The other bakkie reportedly overturned and the driver sustained minor injuries. The driver of the truck was seriously injured and the jaws of life had to be used to free him from the truck. The patients were transported to Nkonjeni hospital for continued care.
There were at least three serious collisions in the Ugu district, south of the province, where one person was killed and at least at least 11 people were injured. The fatal accident occurred on the N2 near Paddock. The single vehicle accident resulted in one fatality and three people survived the crash and were transported to Murchison and Port Shepstone hospital.
The exact cause of the collisions is being investigated.
Emergency services are still on high alert with traffic volumes expected to increase from today. Motorists are urged to please drive carefully and any emergency incidents can be reported to 10177
