Taxi collision at intersection leaves 1 dead, 17 injured Durban

One person has been killed and seventeen people including four policeman have sustained various injuries after a taxi and a police vehicle collided at the intersection of West Street and Shepstone Road just after 4pm today.

Rescue Care paramedics arrived on the accident scene to find total chaos. People injured were lying all over the road and side walk. A quick assessment revealed that four policeman and thirteen people from the taxi had sustained various injuries. The driver of the taxi was entrapped in the wreckage and had unfortunately passed away before paramedics arrived. More ambulances were called to assist in the multiple casualty scene. Once all of the injured had been stabilized they were transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required.

At this stage it is unclear what caused the collision however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.

West Street was closed from Stanger Street whilst emergency personal worked to clear the scene.
