SAPS destroy 9 477 firearms in Vereeniging, Gauteng

Today the SAPS destroyed 9 477 firearms in Vereeniging, Gauteng. Of these, 2 659 were from Mpumalanga, 2 095 from the Eastern Cape, 1 146 from North West and 355 from the Northern Cape.

National Supply Chain Management also cleared 3 222 official firearms for destruction. Over the past four years, SAPS has destroyed more than 110 000 firearms and about one million rounds of ammunition. A further 15 000 firearms are currently being processed for destruction in July this year.

Over and above this, about 43 000 knives confiscated in Gauteng have also been destroyed over the past six months. During her address, National Police Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, thanks the men and women in blue who work tirelessly to rid our communities of illegal firearms.

She also thanked community members who hand firearms in voluntarily.
