Two suspects arrested after tip-off on farm near near Howick with unlicenced firearms

Yesterday afternoon, 21 January 2015 Boston police just outside Howick were conducting their normal crime prevention duties in their policing precinct when they received information about two men who had unlicensed firearms in their possession at a local farm. They proceeded to the area and spotted two men fitting the description. These men fled on foot when they saw a police vehicle and police gave chase. Both of them were apprehended and searched.

A 24-year-old man was found with a 9mm pistol in his possession and a 37-year-old man was found with a 308 Rifle and one live round of ammunition. Both firearms were seized and suspects were taken to Boston police station for detention. They were charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 9mm pistol was stolen from Inanda area in August 2011 and the rifle belonged to a deceased person from Northern Cape Province. Both suspects are appearing at Impendle Magistrates’ Court today, 22 January 2015. Firearms will be sent to ballistics to ascertain if they have been used in the commission of any other crime in the country.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended Boston police for confiscating the firearms. “We will make sure that we maintain these operations to root-out the proliferation of illegal firearms in our province,” she said.
