Hijacker killed and police officer wounded in shootout in Limpopo

On Wednesday 11 February 2015 at about 15:30, on the road between Marble Hall and Groblersdal, Limpopo, five suspects in a Ford Ranger cornered a cigarette delivery vehicle and opened fire.

Personnel of a security company accompanying the delivery vehicle returned fire. A passing SAPS constable from the Groblersdal Local Criminal Record Centre observed a suspect fleeing into a nearby bush and immediately gave chase.

The suspect shot the police officer in the stomach and personnel of the security company returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. The police officer was transported to hospital in a serious condition. Another suspect was wounded and arrested during the exchange of gunfire.

Unfortunately, 3 suspects managed to flee with the delivery vehicle, which was later found abandoned in Groblersdal. The hunt for the remaining suspects continues.

We wish the brave policeman a speedy recovery.
