One dead, eight injured in taxi collision

A collision between a taxi and light motor vehicle this morning on the R82 near Vereeniging has left one man dead and eight others injured.

ER24 paramedics from the Vaal branch arrived on the scene and found the taxi lying off the road in the veld. Some of the patients were lying around the vehicle.

On inspection, paramedics found the lifeless body of the taxi driver lying next to his vehicle. Unfortunately the man had already succumbed to his severe injuries.

A ten-year-old boy was also found lying next to the taxi in a critical condition. It was apparent that the child had been ejected from the vehicle during the collision.

Paramedics began their treatment of the patient as well as providing him with advanced life support to stabilise his vital signs. Once treated, the patient was airlifted by the AER24 helicopter to Baragwanath Hospital for further treatment.

The remaining seven patients were found to have sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Paramedics treated the patients for their injuries and thereafter transported them to various hospitals including Mediclinic Vereeniging for further observations.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
