Police officers arrest suspect transporting abalone illegally

Early this morning, Monday 16 February, members from the Cape Town K9 Unit responded to information of a vehicle allegedly transporting abalone from Buffelsjag to Cape Town and conducted patrols in the vicinity of the N2 freeway.

At approximately 06:00 they spotted the vehicle, a silver BMW 320 sedan and pulled the vehicle from the road at the intersection of the N2 freeway and Victoria Road, Somerset West.

Upon searching the vehicle the members recovered 15 bags of shucked abalone. The driver, a 26 year old man from Gordon`s Bay, was arrested and taken to Somerset West SAPS for detention where the abalone was counted by officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. It amounted to 1 958 units with a street value estimated at approximately R 1 million.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Somerset West Magistrates Court today.
