Police recover illicit cigarettes hidden in transported cargo of bananas on truck

Two suspects were arrested following information of a truck transporting a cargo of bananas changed its route to Pretoria where it was to deliver the goods. Police were informed the truck’s location and quickly responded to the said location. On arrival a group of men who were busy offloading the illicit cigarettes which were hidden as part of the cargo.

Two suspects were arrested while others managed to escape the arrest. During investigation a number of boxes with cartons of cigarettes worth thousands of rand, two vehicles alleged to be used for the commission of the crime were recovered. The two suspects were charged with possession of counterfeit goods and will appear tomorrow at the Springs Magistrate’s Court.

The SAPS management acknowledge and appreciate the partnership between the police and members of the public and continue to applaud the great work that led to the arrest, successful prosecution and subsequent imprisonment of many offenders.
