Arrest made and illegal firearm recovered when vehicle from which beer bottle was thrown is stopped

This afternoon Gauteng Flying Squad in Pretoria arrested a suspect in Atteridgeville.

It is alleged that the members were driving behind the suspects’ vehicle when they noticed a beer bottle being flung from the vehicle. They put on the lights and siren to signal the suspects to pull over. The suspects complied and as soon as the driver had alighted from the vehicle, he held out money to the member that was approaching the vehicle. While he did so, the member noticed he had a firearm tucked in the front in his pants. The suspect refused to hand over the firearm and a tussle ensued. The Constable managed to disarm the suspect. The member also sustained injuries during the altercation and has been taken to hospital for medical attention.

The suspect was arrested and his four passengers fled the scene. Police searched the vehicle and found another unlicensed firearm. Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle a white Toyota Corolla was reported stolen in Brooklyn in August 2013.

The suspect will appear in court soon on charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
