M4 Highway closed after afternoon road crash

The M4 south bound was closed to traffic following a multi vehicle collision this afternoon.

Crisis medical paramedics were on scene attending to a driver of a light motor vehicle which collided with a sign pole when they were alerted to the sound of a secondary collision between a minibus taxi and two light motor vehicles.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the initial collision, a male in his late thirties, suffered a broken arm and suspected spinal injuries. He was placed on a specialized stretcher and advanced life support intervention was needed to stabilize him before being transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care.

A thirty two week pregnant commuter from the minibus taxi sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene then taken through to hospital for further diagnostic tests.

The highway remained closed for the duration of the peak traffic period while emergency services worked to clear the scenes. Traffic was diverted off at the Athlone drive off ramp.

The cause of both incidents is unclear and the necessary authorities are investigating further.
