Man airlifted from N12 highway after collision

A man in his sixties sustained severe injuries this afternoon when the vehicle he was traveling in overturned several times on the N12 east near the Rondebult off ramp, east of Johannesburg.

Rescue workers that arrived on the scene found the man still trapped behind the steering wheel of his Hyundai 1-tonner in a critical condition. The Ekurhuleni Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life to free him from the wreckage while paramedics were busy treating him.

Due to the severity of his injuries, they [paramedics] called for the ER24 Emergency Helicopter to airlift him to a hospital in Johannesburg for further treatment. He was treated for several injuries, including multiple fractures.

At this stage the exact cause of the incident is not yet known and it was not clear on scene if another vehicle was involved in the collision. The Ekurhuleni Metro Police assisted with closing off the highway while the helicopter landed on the highway.
