Man critical after truck collision outside of Newcastle

A man in his 40s is in a critical condition this morning after a collision on the N11 outside of Newcastle in KwaZulu Natal.

ER24 paramedics from the Newcastle branch arrived on scene and found a wrecked bakkie in the middle of the one lane. The front of the bakkie had been completely smashed, causing oil to spread across the road. A large truck had parked some distance away on the side of the road.

On assessment, paramedics found the male patient trapped inside his vehicle and in a critical condition.

Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the patient in an hour operation. Once freed, paramedics provided the patient with advanced life support treatment and thereafter transported him to Mediclinic Newcastle for further treatment.

It is understood that the collision was caused by the bakkie colliding with the wheels of the truck.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
