One person killed in seven car pile-up on N1

A man was killed this evening and another was left with critical injuries after seven cars collided with each other on the N1 south before William Nicol in Fourways.

Paramedics and rescue services that arrived on the scene found cars and debris scattered across the highway. Paramedics found numerous people standing around on the scene with minor injuries. Upon further assessment they [paramedics] found a man with fatal injuries near one of the vehicles. Another person was found on scene with serious injuries and later transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance. At this stage it is unclear from which vehicle the person with serious injuries came from.

It is understood from bystanders on the scene that a vehicle involved in the collision apparently broke down in the middle of the highway. The driver of the vehicle was standing outside of his vehicle. Another bystander explained that multiple vehicles crashed into each other after one vehicle collided into the broken down vehicle and its driver.

Several lanes of the highway were closed for traffic while rescuers were busy on the scene. Occupants from several vehicles sustained only minor injuries and declined to receive further medical care.

The exact cause will be investigated by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.
