Three arrested attempting to smuggle abalone in stolen car into Lesotho

Three suspects appeared before the Ladybrand Magistrates’ Court yesterday, 9 March 2015 facing charges of possession of abalone and possession of a stolen motor vehicle after they were arrested on Friday evening, 6 March 2015 at about 21:30.

It was on Friday 6 March 2015 at about 21:30 when South African Police Service members based at Maseru Port Of Entry noticed a white Volkswagen Polo about to cross the border into Lesotho. Members searched and circulated the vehicle’s information and found that the vehicle was allegedly stolen at Bethelsdorp during April last year. Upon searching it, members found 83,4 kilograms of frozen abalone with a street value of R250 000, 00. The driver and the two passengers were arrested for possession of abalone and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Upon defrosting the abalone police counted 848 unit of abalone. The three suspects namely: Motlatsi Tsenoli (37) a Lesotho citizen, Cast Lwazi (36) and Mlongeni Gcine (35) both from East London in the Eastern Cape will appear before the Ladybrand Magistrates’ Court on the 24 March 2015 where they are expected to apply for bail. The three will remain in custody.
