Two people have tragically lost their lives following an accident on the N4 near the R80 in The Orchards, Akasia this afternoon. The accident took place approximately five kilometres before the Brits Toll plaza.
Netcare 911 paramedics and other services arrived at the scene and found that two vehicles had collided head-on resulting in the female driver of one of the vehicles tragically losing her life during the crash. The male driver of the other vehicle was found to be in a critical condition and he was also entrapped in his vehicle.
The fire department made use of the Jaws of Life to extricate the injured man from his vehicle and the entire rescue operation took approximately one and a half hours in total.
Once removed from the vehicle, the critically injured man was rushed to a nearby hospital for the urgent medical care that the required but sadly the man passed away shortly after arrival at the hospital, due to the extensive injuries he had sustained during the crash.
Exact detail surrounding the cause of the accident and preceding events are still unclear and will remain the subject of a police investigation.
Traffic was severely affected as a result of the collision.
